How Designers Earn Extra Income

Recently, I've been hearing and reading a lot of people talk about how designers or entrepreneurs should have a "side-hustle" or find more ways to create a passive income to supplement their day job. And who wouldn't want to give their total income an extra boost? The internet is an amazing resource that we should all use to our advantage. I've curated a list of ways designers can add to their bank accounts without quitting their full-time job.

  1. Starting a monetized blog. Although this seems obvious, it is quite a lot of work for very little income from the start. Once a following has been established and the views are consistently high it makes a worthwhile investment of your time. Whether it's in the form of ads based off of views or clicks, or even affiliate links, it can add up!
  2. Sell Printables on Etsy Creating an Etsy store where users can quickly download and print their purchases. Esty requires the seller to provide the finished merchandise and fulfill all shipping which means most sellers of craft eventually turn it into a full-time job because of how time-intensive it is. Selling digital downloads makes it an easy way to be a side-gig requiring less time.
  3. Print on Demand Create designs for fun and then use a company to do all the printing and shipping portion of the e-commerce. There are increasing more sites that allow designers to create a store on their site and let people order a design on phone cases, tote bags, clothing, or wall art. Some of the more popular ones are Threadless, Rudbubble, Printify, and Society6.
  4. Teach Online Sites like Skillshare and Udemy allow you to create your own courses and set your own rates!

I know, I know, spring is a long ways away from us here in the midwest, but I'm absolutely in love with the new spring color forecast by pantone!

And HELLO MARSALA! How modern is the color of the year? *SWOON*.
